June 2011 - NLRB upholds ILWU charges against HTH Pacific Beach Hotel

HTH management loses, Pacific Beach Hotel workers and ILWU win

National Labor Relations Board orders hotel management to obey the law

A three-member panel of the National Labor Relations Board in Washington D.C. rejected HTH Corporation's objections and adopted most of the decisions of Administrative Law Judge James M. Kennedy which found the hotel in violation of numerous provisions of federal labor law. Furthermore, the NLRB panel imposed new remedies based on the findings of the NLRB General Counsel which went beyond the recommendations made by Judge Kennedy. Read the decision here.

The decision was issued on June 14, 2011, and gives HTH management 14 days to comply with the order. The Board is the highest policy making body of the federal agency charged with administering and enforcing the National Labor Relations Act which protects workers' rights to organize into unions.

Workers achieve a better life through collective organization in unions

• Labor unions are organizations of working people who join together for mutual benefit and to promote fairness and justice on the job. Labor unions give working people the collective power to improve the living standards of their families and build a more democratic and equitable society.

• When workers are united in unions, they have the power to bargain with their employers for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Through their unions, workers are able to protect their rights and have a stronger voice in what happens in the workplace. Workers gain greater respect and dignity when they are unionized.

• Unions give working people the power to influence government and the political process. Through union political action, unions help improve the community and influence government to serve the needs of working people.
